Why did CNN spill the beans on Barack?

"Okay, boys, I'll cover for you."
Earlier this week CNN had a startling report:
US investigators wiretapped former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort under secret court orders before and after the election, sources tell CNN, an extraordinary step involving a high-ranking campaign official now at the center of the Russia meddling probe. The government snooping continued into early this year, including a period when Manafort was known to talk to President Donald Trump.
Let me get this straight: An administration is spying on its political opponent. Exactly how is this different from Watergate?

Now let me ask this: Why would CNN, who has been more than eager to accuse The Donald of being in bed with the Russians, report that Obama was spying on him? Doesn't it make The O look like, well, Nixon?

Several answers are floating around.

The journalist Don Surber has an idea. First he sets it up:
This is a bombshell.
It proves the Obama administration used the U.S. intelligence community to spy on the political opposition.
We know that this was used politically because Susan Rice "unmasked" people in private conversations and communications recorded by our spies.
This is shocking information that should send those involved with the FISA to prison.
But why?
Someone planted this story with CNN.
1. To bring Mueller down.
2. To help Mueller.

The first is self-evident. Spying on political foes is a huge no-no. This creates a big problem for an investigation already tarred with politics. However, the second possibility is more likely because I see Mueller as being in big trouble.
He has nothing. Six months into this investigation he is still adding on to the payroll in the hope of getting something. This story was aimed at keeping the story going.
Here's another thought, from a commenter at Instapundit:
“Do you remember when the IRS scandal unfolded? It was brought up at a press briefing. They were trying to get ahead of the Scandal by releasing the information in measured doses, so it could be handled carefully by Administration allies in the Press. That is what they are doing right now, with the wiretapping.”
An intriguing question: Why would CNN reveal Obama's Watergate? Reveal that Obama's FBI, led by James Comey, was spying on his political opposition?
